Hello Kitty:  Stump Village

OK, so if you think In The Night Garden is weird, get ready for mayhem.
Sanrio has brought us a claymation version of Hello Kitty and it's fabulous.

Helpfully scheduled by Cartoonito in the UK at 3:45am each day, you'll
either need Sky+ or an insomniac toddler for this one.

Purists will be disappointed to learn that all previous storylines regarding
the characters have been completely forgotten.  And, gasp, Hello Kitty
sometimes appears to have a mouth - 'that's just not right,' yell the Hello
Kitty anoraks.

Stump Village is though, a gorgeous creation.  Some of the best loved
Sanrio characters appear - Badtz-Maru, My Melody, Pom Pom Purin,
Cinnamoroll and, of course, Hello Kitty herself.

So what can you expect?  Lots of cutsey, cuddly moments, the occasional
outbreak of mindless violence and a healthy dose of surrealism thrown in
for good measure.

From what I can gather, the cartoon is shown in the East without any
narration.  Us lucky westerners get the poor narrator, who's job it is to try to
make any sort of sense of the on-screen madness.

We'll not spoil too much, but here's a few snippets from the 26 wonderful
episodes:

Look out for the boardgame episode.  Surely only the Japanese would find
a children's boardgame where physical violence is meted out to the losers
to be acceptable.

The random allowance of magic to solve plot dead-ends reaches it's peak
with the star that allows the cars made from giant fruits to move.  (Yes,
really.)

Finally, watch out for the peak of surrealism when weight-lifting weights
become flying machines in a complete abandonment of any scientific laws.
Newton will be turning in his grave again, having only just got himself settled
after the knitted balloons episode.

Whatever - don't think too much.  Just enjoy this feast of visual prozac.
