Yu-Gi-Oh - A Beginner's Guide

Since the launch of the GX Series of the prominent cartoon series, Yu-Gi-Oh, the
Trading Card Game based on the series has been making a comeback in popularity in
playgrounds around the world.

Yu-Gi-Oh began life in Japan, as a Manga Comic in 1996 and made the transition to
television in 1998.  In 2001, the cartoon began airing in English speaking countries,
with the card game based on the series following soon afterwards.  The Yu-Gi-Oh
World Championships began in 2002 and have remained a massive event ever since.

Nowadays there are well in excess of 2000 unique playing cards available, with fans
putting huge effort put into acquiring the most sought-after cards.  Single cards have, at
times, fetched as much as $6000.  In stores, cards are sold either in Booster Packs,
usually containing 9 cards, or in complete decks of around 40 cards.

Often in the past, Yu-Gi-Oh has been criticised as a rich person's game, but
increasingly the rarer cards are being re-released in larger quantities and the 'decks' of
cards are becoming more 'stand alone'.

So what do kids do with their cards?  Some just like to collect and swap with friends,
but for others, it is all about the duel.

Yu-Gi-Oh Dueling involves two competitors pitting their card collections and playing
skills against one another.  All the cards feature Monsters, Spells and Traps from the
hit series of cartoons.  Look out for famous card names like Blue Eyes White Dragon
and Exodia.

Each player starts with 8000 'life points' and takes turns to use the monsters, spells
and traps at their disposal to try to reduce their opponents life points to zero.  Each
must have at least 40 cards in their dueling deck.  There is no maximum number of
cards, but in reality all the best players stick to 40.

The complexity comes with using combinations of cards to their best effect, and
serious players spend many long hours figuring out which of their cards to put into
their duelling deck.

As we said above, Yu-Gi-Oh needn't be massively financially expensive, but with the
number of hours a player takes over building their best deck, it's can be invaluable to
the individual.  It's a good idea to buy card protector pockets and a decent steel tin to
keep the cards in.

Oh, and be on the lookout for fake cards.  You can pick up a sheet in our shop (or ask
us to send one with your next online order) about how to spot them.  Just like fake
DVDs and CDs, they are illegal, and may be helping fund organised crime.  The
simplest way to tell is the price.  You don't see Yu-Gi-Oh cards at much below their
RRP ever.  If the price is too good to be true, then they are fake.  Holiday resorts abroad
are particularly bad for them.  Also be very cautious buying rare single cards on ebay.
Look for a good seller reputation or better still, go to one of the online stores that sell
single cards and pay a bit more to be safe.

If you want to learn more about the game, then feel free to join us in the shop, every
Sunday between 2 and 4.  We'll happily teach anyone to play (including Mums and
Dads) and there are always plenty of other players to challenge and trade cards with.

And remember, bus stop toy shop has the widest range of cards in Scotland.
